I would like to disagree with you a little.

If we had to recompile then all those programs that got lost (Y2K ring a bell?) probably wouldn't have. To this day we still have people trying to translate load to source (usually COBOL but plug in almost any language).

I agree its a PITA to recompile but there some (good?) reasons to do so.
