True, but that would have no effect on the problem being discussed, since it does not matter if the esoteric is defined to any devices at all, let alone all the affected devices. You can code a non-existent esoteric in JCL without any errors, as long as the allocation winds up being SMS managed. For instance, I have used UNIT=VIO many times in JCL and ACS routines on systems where there was no such esoteric defined.
