Actually, there will be one less Amdahl'er next week when I move from doing
mainframe interoperability at Microsoft and start with IBM as a zITA in the
Pacific Northwest next week.

Subject: z/Journal - Dark Side or Bright Side

I want to thank z/Journal for running "another Viewpoint". I want to know
what is being said about how folks can get off of the mainframe and convert it
to Windows or even run a mixed mode. By reporting what is being contended
and all in one place it make my life a bunch easier. Otherwise I would have to
pour over all those other pubs to find the info.

Recently my "Ace IBM SE" jumped over to the other side. It seems Microsoft
has formed a group of mainframers with some IBM'ers lured away and the way
I understand old Amdahl'ers to show people how to convert from the
mainframe to Windows. Apparently she was convinced by them it was a
doable and she was going to learn how. I applauded her move for it was
certainly a hefty pay raise.

I contend this is a great opportunity for someone on the mainframe side to go
over to the other side and actually do it. Besides she will learn what are all
the ins and outs of the attempt. In the end, if it is not real, then she will
know
both side sand can always defect back over to the mainframe side with all the
battle scars. If indeed it is true, I am hoping she can explain it to me in
terms
I can understand. If it is only partially true, then she will even more valuable
with the experiences of what should run on mainframes and what should run
on Windows.

What I really believe is some implementations belong on Windows and others
belong on the mainframe with the caveat of "it depends". If I was younger, I
would considering doing the same thing. Personally you'd always win no matter
what.

My final analysis says in the end, "reality will prevail".
