I've been running for decades with sizes wider than 80, my eyes are terrible and I can still read, e.g., a 132-column screen. FWIW, I find 120 columns to be wide enough for most editing, although I've been known to use 160 as circumstances dictated. -- Shmuel (Seymour J.)
