As someone who coded Assembler sub-routines for use by COBOL programs
and who has various Assembler exits on the JES3 and CBT tapes (from 17
- 24 years ago), I would try to limit the amount of assembler purely
because it is different.  It requires separate record descriptions if
it is dealing with files and can be obscure as all get out.  Also, if
IBM would FINALLY support the 2002 COBOL standard, most of the
justification for Assembler for applications would go away.
