It is a Temporary fix until the next release of the program where all of
the code is then at a new base level (FMID). IOW: When the code is
issued at FMID level is has no known errors. Once some are found they
are reported as APARs (and possibly fixes are issued). Then the APARs
are temporally fixed by PTFs (which fix the newly discovered errors in
the FMID level code). Eventually "clean" permanent code is released as a
new FMID level.
Note: I am ignoring the use of PTFs to issue new functionality and only
addressing the correction of code and functionality in the FMID code.
Primo: there are APAR fixes before PTF is released. Secundo: PTF is
permanent fix, it will last with the FMID to it's end of life. New FMID
is new release, not just "FMID+accepted PTFs". Tertio: SPE aka "new
functionality" PTFs - you shouldn't ignore them, we talk about
consistency ;-)
Of course this is only other look at the same issue.
Personally I still have no objections when non-mainframe talk about
"patches for z/OS" or call my team as "mainframe administrators" .
BTW: sometimes we're called "wardens" (such as in museum, curators) or
simply "dinos". ;-)
