The Defoe is:

Wherever God erects a house of prayer,
The devil always builds a chapel there;
And 'twill be found upon examination,
The latter has the largest [sic] congregation.

It's from The True-Born Englishman, pt i, 1.1

It is|was 'well known'. It is, I suspect, derivative too. The
Elizabethan divine Richard Bancroft (1544-1610) said

Where Christ erecteth his Church, the devil in the same churchyard
will have his chapel.

in a once celebrated sermon delivered at St. Paul's Cross on 9 February 1588.
