Regarding reading the prolog: please do. But please note that 99% of what is in the prolog (at least the part that is considered programming interface information) is in the reference book. It's just not in a "guide".
The reason that prologs of our newer executable macros tend to be quite comprehensive these days is that to some extent the reference books and the prologs are created from the same source.
