I've done it as well, but just make sure you don't skip any spill datasets. In your case, if you have SMPPTS1, 2, 3, 4, and 5; and SMPPTS4 is almost empty, you can't just move 4 to 3 and delete/remove 4. SMP/E will ignore anything after the first "missing one" so in this case, SMPPTS5 won't be looked at.
