Do they actually need the scale? The high granularity of Z can be a big problem. There are many ways to achieve the scalability and reliability of a Mainframe. Look at the blockchain infrastructure behind BitCoin. They might cost more, they might need more staff to manage, but definitely achievable. Which brings me to another sort, what up-time do you need? Can you tolerate off line working for a while So what is capable of replacing Mainframes. As none of the challenger "Banks" we have in Europe so Wise, Monzo, Revolut have Mainframes. In fact if it had to rely on Mainframes I don't believe these institutions would exist. So Revolut currently has 60 million customers and no Mainframe! Here is some publicity which has a little info about what they use:- https://www.revolut.com/news/revolut_and_google_cloud_deepen_strategic_partnership_to_power_global_growth_to_100m_customers/ I am a Revolut customer, its not let me down yet, but I have alternatives available "just in case". On the other hand as a UK resident its low currency conversion fees has saved me a lot of money when I travel around the world.. I also see from Facebook that lots of my fellow Brits with second homes in Spain are switching from expensive Spanish banks with Mainframes to Wise, It has a mere 15 million customers, but again no Mainframe. It runs on the Amazon cloud... So my feelings are, if you have a Mainframe with zOS hang on to it, moving is difficult. If you are starting from scratch, there are lots of alternatives. They might not have the utter reliability of a Mainframe but they are easier to scale. > >Cheers - Mike > Dave ---------------------------------------------------------------------- For IBM-MAIN subscribe / signoff / archive access instructions, send email to [email protected] with the message: INFO IBM-MAIN
