When I first designed the port I made the decision to work in classic z/OS

to documentation about make files, etc. in z/OS.

z/OS UNIX System Services Command Reference (SA22-7801-14), chapter 2

In "Developing Applications for z/OS UNIX" (3 days, details

we devote almost 20% of the student material to make and makefiles.

Most people use GNU make which is more portable
http://www.gnu.org/software/make/manual/make.html. You can get it from the z/OS
UNIX tools and toys site
http://www-03.ibm.com/systems/z/os/zos/features/unix/bpxa1ty1.html.

You may want to post questions about C, z/OS UNIX etc on the OEMVS newsgroup
which is where the experts hang out.
