Actually did try that and got the same result. There must be some way to do
this because it's too hard to imagine that I'm doing something someone else
hasn't done before.

I'm not from the starship Enterprise. :-)

Did you try 8 Hyphens?

Alter name MGMTCLAS(--------)

The only other thought is a DFDSS Dump and Restore with a NULLMGT Class parm

But that would only work if they are not allocated.

I guess I am curious as to why you are changing the mgmt classes on so many
files?

Thank you for your suggestions, but no luck. Using ( - ) and (-) both return
the same message, mgmtclas does not exist.

I can't use the panels because I have tens of thousands of datasets to change.

Any other suggestions?

Have you tried using the ISMF Panels? The ALTER command there allows the use
of a single hyphen. (-)

Or try using a single Hyphen

ALTER name MGMTCLAS(-)

I can use IDCAMS ALTER to change a Management Class of a dataset but can’t seem
to delete one. I have seen some old documentation where the syntax was:
 MANAGEMENTCLASS( -NULL- )
But that doesn’t work (no management class with that name) and no other attempt
with NULL or blanks works. Current documentation says nothing about removing
Management Class from a dataset.

How does one do it?
