Wow! That reminds me of something I did over 50 years ago when I was still at 
school. 

By cutting a series of binary-coded holes and slots along the edge of ordinary 
playing cards, it was possible to sort the deck using a knitting needle.

I learned how to do this from a book called "The Gentle Art of Mathematics", by 
Dan Pedoe, published in 1958.

I still have that book, and somewhere, hidden away in a box, I think I still 
have the deck of cards.
