If vendor-provided solutions are still on the table (even though having SL 
support in DDR and even VMFPLC2, is still a worthwhile objective), 
consider Safe Software's (http://www.safesoftware.com/) lower-cost 
product: SAFEDR.  They've presented at SHARE several times regarding D.R., 
and provide SAFEDR as a means to produce (modified) DDR-created SL tapes.

Can you imagine having VMFPLC2 handle SL tapes and receiving SL tapes for 
IBM z/VM product distribution and service?  What a reduction in guessing 
during installation and maintenance for those without direct access to 
tape drives!  :-)
