Speed is *always* important. :-) There are companies who make FICON and ESCON "channel extenders" who encapsulate and encrypt channel data on a WAN to a remote location. If you don't have guaranteed WAN bandwidth between sites, you may end up with a problem. Certification of drives attached via a channel extender is typically the responsibility of the channel extender vendor, not the drive vendor. For IBM drives, you *may* need an RPQ to obtain IBM support for drives so attached.
