We have active DB2Connect gateways running on each of our IFLs (under VM). The DB2Connect clients are configured to point to primary and alternate gateways - if one gateway goes down, client traffic is automatically redirected to the other. When we need to apply VM maintenance, we shecdule one system to go down and back up, then the other.
This could be done even if you only have one CEC with a single IFL. Simply define two VM LPARs to share the IFL. They have an identical I/O configuration on each machine. If they need to do maintenance on one z/VM, they bring down the Linux machines on one system and bring them back up on the other system. They essentially have their own hot site, it isn't exactly 24X7, but it's real, real close. Bringing the Linuxes down on one an up on the other can be done in a matter of minutes (and not too many of them).
