Hi Scott - To "free" the slot, you simply make it "Reserved" again. Use the CP DEFINE CPOWNED command and use the RESERVED parm and you should be all set. This assumes your volume is already detached from the system, which it sounds like you did.
Also make sure you have updated your SYSTEM CONFIG to make sure that slot is also defined as reserved.
