Alan, http://www-03.ibm.com/systems/resources/systems_z_news_announcement_pdf_ zvm.pdf has a discussion of z/VM vs. VMWARE in Appendix B. I've seen a link to an entire white paper devoted to a comparison of the two. I thought it was on IBM's site, but a quick search didn't find it.
