Frank, we've had a occasion to do this a few times lately and it is not fun.
It is far better to take a PSW Restart dump or even better, a snapdump, if you
system is still responsive.

We found the tape is problematic to get mounted (in the ATL, requires DFSMSRM
to mount so you really need another system mounting it or some sort of access
to the ATL that I don't have). And the output on the tape can be quite
large... Too large for a 32,000 cyl CMS minidisk. (We didn't bother seeing if
dumpload supported SFS because we didn't want to add that much space into an
SFS). And this will be totally out the door here when we go to VTS and remove
those 3592 since the VTS tapes are much smaller).

PSW Restart is slick and not in the dark ages!

Subject: [IBMVM] Standalone dump procedure

Let me get this straight:

1) The standalone dump program can be placed on disk
2) If placed on disk, it must use cylinder 0
3) VM disk allocation map is on cylinder 0
4) Therefore, the standalone dump program cannot be placed on a CP
disk
5) Also, the dump cannot go to disk, a tape is required

Have I read this right? Seems I'm back in the dark ages (as far as this
is concerned).
