We updated the "Servicing z/VM" chapter in the latest Virtualization Cookbook for SLES 11 (at the top of http://linuxvm.org/present/) If this is your problem, we ran into the same thing where the MAINT 500 disk ran out of space trying to apply a z/VM 5.4 RSU (is this z/VM 5.4?).
