All modern devices work the same way.  The Multiple Image Facility (MIF) 
ensures that the machine-readable subchannel number associated with the 
human-readable *device* number is unique in the CEC. 

I have seen people get caught in the 'maximum subchannels per chpid' trap 
because they had shared chpids, a lot of LPARs, and were skipping device 
numbers in the different LPARs, wasting subchannels.  E.g. If you define 
32 devices on an OSA chpid shared across 8 LPARs, you will use 8 x 32 = 
256 subchannels on that OSA.
