I've heard a variation of that too, Laree, only adding that it coincided with the advent of the carriage as an elite means of transportation. Once carriages became common, the elite could more focused on what looked "pretty" in front of a carriage, as opposed to what was comfortable to ride. Karen Thomas, NC
