This may seem abusive, but if you've ever had to lead a horse out through a wildfire,it is a good skill for them to have. When I was a kid we did this many times, and the horses (not icies) were always easy to rescue because they were not afraid, even when we could hardly breathe for the smoke and approaching fire.
