Chiming in here: I'm guessing you temporarily filled memory up, and when you look at it after the crash there appears to be plenty of free memory, since it is after the crash.
There's an easy way to test the theory: give the system some swap space, and see if the problem stops happening.
Alternately: run 'sar -r 10' (sar is in the sysstat package, -r reports on memory usage) capturing the output to a file. If you see committed memory (%commit) usage growing towards 100%, and then freeing up after icinga dies then you have a reasonable diagnosis.
