12 Teams showed up at Navy to try their hand at match racing aboard Navy's
fleet of Colgate 26s.

The day featured challenging conditions and a format unfamiliar to many of
the competitors. The first flight saw northwest winds 5 - 8 knots at the
start with a dark squall crossing the course mid race. The breeze built to
20 - 25 with higher gusts and shifted right 30 degrees. With some teams
unsure of their start sequence, only two matches properly sailed the first
flight with Coast Guard topping Cornell and SUNY Maritime besting Army.

Flight two was sailed in 25 knots and a building sea. All four pairs
successfully started with Navy topping Army, Michigan State beating Coast
Guard, St. Marys on top of Purdue and Webb besting Michigan. Following this
flight, racing was suspended and competitors adjourned ashore to dry out and
listen in on an impromptu match race basics seminar led by ISAF Umpire Sandy
Grosvenor.

The breeze abated sufficiently and competitors were sent back on the water
for a third flight which was run in more docile 7 - 17 knots in more
protected section of the Severn River.

In flight 3, Navy topped SUNY Maritime, Michigan State beat Cornell, Mass
Maritime beat St. Marys, and Michigan beat Webb.

Racing continues Sunday.
