For the third year straight, the Intrepid Trophy Regatta came down to a tie breaker among the top 4 teams.
PRO Taran Teague managed to complete a full 11 flight round robin despite a
90 minute thunderstorm break.
Maine Maritime, SUNY, KP and Navy each finished the round with 9 wins and 2
losses apiece. Maine had beat SUNY and KP but lost to Navy, SUNY beat KP
and Navy but lost to Maine. KP beat Navy but lost to SUNY and Maine. And
Navy beat Maine but lost to SUNY and KP. The tie was broken first by
determining who among the top 4 had more wins against those teams. Both
Maine and SUNY had 2 wins while KP and Navy had only one. Maine had beaten
SUNY which allowed them to stake claim to the overall title. SUNY wound up
second while KP by virtue of beating Navy took third with Navy in fourth.
All of the competitors displayed excellent keelboat skills and most teams
had their match race moves in order as well.
Thanks to PRO Teague and her fantastic Race Committee that included Jan
Richardson, Marion Johnson, Kathy deAngelo, Marino DiMarzo, Allen Faurot,
Frieda Wildey and Bill Museler.
Thanks also to Chief Umpire Angelo Buscemi and his gang which included Doug
Sloan who traveled from California, Charlie Cook who came all the way from
MA, as well as locals Dobbs Davis, Mike Jones, Dan Trammell, Dick Morin,
Maureen Mills, Bruce Bingman and Brian Robinson.
The Intrepid Trophy Regatta is applying to ISAF to be recognized as a Grade
3 match race event for this year and the future so competing skippers will
ultimately earn ISAF match race ranking.
