REGATTA HIGHLIGHTS: Presented by Zihk.
Sat: 6 races in each division were sailed in almost every wind condition
keeping the race committee hustling all day. The day started with cold, brisk
northerly and a somewhat slack tide. As the day went on, however, the breeze
faded slowly and the tide began to flood harder and harder. 4 races in each
division were completed in the river before conditions were unsailable. Half
of those races were goldcups and the rest were W4 with a leeward gate. After
some delay, racing was resumed "around the corner" on Crab Bank and a set was
completed in the southerly sea breeze. By that time the ebb tide was
subsiding. Those races were W4s with a leeward gate. There were 2 protests
resulting in 2 DSQs and no breakdowns reported.
Sun: Sailors were greeted to very similar conditions as the previous morning.
Temperatures were in the low 40s and there was a moderate northerly. There was
still a substantial ebb tide until around 11 when it slackened and quickly
switched. As the clouds burned off the breeze began to fade out. Racing was
called around 1pm after 2 sets were completed. W4 with a leeward gate courses
were used. One redress was filed and granted resulting in a DSQ from the day
before taken away. No breakdowns. Thanks to C of C undergrads who ran a good
event in challenging conditions and also to coaches Sam Ficksman, Charles
Higgins, and Josh Putnam for helping with protests. Awards were provided by
Zihk Sailing Gear, and were greatly appreciated. Enjoy the off-season!
