Port of LA Harbor Cup

California Maritime Academy

March 14-15,2009

SAN PEDRO, Calif.

Saturday. Sailing was delayed for 2 1/2 hours waiting for wind---any
wind---to fill in. Under a light overcast, the course was tentatively set
for southwest, anticipating a sea breeze, but shortly before 2 o'clock it
arrived from southeast. The fleet of eight Catalina 37s got underway with a
3 foot ocean swell. Defending champion Maine Maritime Academy duked it out
with 2008 runner-up USC and a solid California Maritime Academy team, while
Chapman University logged a steady string of 3-1-2-4 finishes that
separated it by three points from defending champion Maine and 2008 and USC
in the eight-boat fleet. Cal State University, Channel Islands, is in fourth
place overall, after Cal Maritime lost a protest to Maine over a
spinnaker-touching incident at their tight 1-2 finish of the last race.

Sunday:

The breeze filled in early and the first of four races got off on time.
Maine came out strong winning the first race, USC came back from a fifth to
take the bullet in the second race with Maine taking a fifth after being
pushed over the line by USC. Cal Maritime posted two 2nds and Chapman
struggled with an 8, 7. Although Maine looked solid, it was still anyone's
game.

Chapman came back to win the third race and the newcomer's CSU Channel
Islands won the last race to tie USC for second, Chapman held on for 4th and
Cal Maritime with two deep finishes finished fifth. Thanks to Al Garnier
and the LAYC race committee and volunteers and the Port of LA for their
sponsorship.
