St. Francis Intersectional St. Francis Yacht Club & Stanford University April 4-5, 2009
Regatta Highlights: Saturday: Sailors were greeted with 70 degree sunshine and a 5 knots northwesterly. With a 3 knot ebb raging, the 32 boat fleet did a great job keeping themselves out of trouble on the start line. The ebb slowly died and the wind veered to the west and increased to 13 knots -- true champagne sailing conditions. The final A set of the day featured the onset of an "early flood" tidal current. Current quickly increased to 2.5 knots and sailors struggled to make progress upwind. 6 races were completed in A-division; 4 races in B-division. Two requests for redress; one granted. No protests. The first race course of each set was a double W/L with an offset and L-gate and a downwind finish. The second race of each set was a single W/L with an offset, L-gate and an upwind finish. Smooth rotations were made off California's newest beach 50 yards to the east of GGYC. The start line was 1/8 mile northeast of said beach. Sunday: Crystal clear skies and 70 degree sunshine warned that the north/northeast gradient was going to be a force to be reckoned with. Several attempts were made to start races in 2 knots of wind; alas, the 3 knot ebb foiled any such attempt. Sailors were sent back to the beach for lunch. After lunch, the breeze finally filled... not from the west, but from the north! (an extremely rare occurrence for this time of year). 4 races were completed in B-division while A-division only completed 2 races. A 3-6 knot northerly combined with an east-to-west ebb current made for some interesting cross current conditions. The final B race saw the sea breeze kick the breeze left and level out at 7 knots. Thanks to all the Race and Protest Committee volunteers, especially Rolf Kaiser and Shannon Bonds who chaired this event. Thanks to John Vandemoer and the Stanford Sailing Team for their efforts in hosting. Lastly, huge thanks to PRO Mike Kalin, who ran spectacular races in tricky breeze and current conditions. St. Francis Yacht Club is looking forward to hosting the PCCs next weekend, as well as the Women's and Dinghy Nationals later this Spring. A division = 8 Races B division = 8 Races A B TOT 1.
