REGATTA HIGHLIGHTS:
MCSA Single Handed Qualifiers @ Marquette/UWMilwaukee
On Saturday we saw temperatures in the low 40s and high 30s with wind
between 15 to 20mph. Both Women's and Men's divisions completed 2 races
in the morning with a consistent 16mph wind. After heading in for lunch
and to warm up, the fleets headed back on the lake in the afternoon as
the winds became shiftier, oscillating between west and northwest. Many
sailors retired early due to the extreme conditions. Men's division
completed 5 races, while Women's completed 4.
On Sunday the fleet experienced low temperatures in the 30s with a lighter
breeze of 6-10mph. The breeze continued to oscillate making it increasingly
difficult for RC to set a fair course throughout the morning. The Men's
division completed 4 more races and the Women's completed 3 before calling
it a day.
The highlight of the event happened when Wisconsin's Meg Six gave her boat
to Michigan State's Lauren Knoles after Knoles mast snapped on the first
upwind leg of Sunday's first race. Due to this show of Corinthian spirit
Knoles went on to finish second in Women's, and qualified for nationals.
Many thanks to the sailors, judges Betsy Altman, George Griswold, and Mike
Kasper, PRO Bob Franke, and Mark Set's Pat Randa for helping to make this
weekend a success despite the frigid temperatures.
