2009 Timme Angsten Regatta
Chicago Yacht Club
November 27-29, 2009

FINAL REPORT

REGATTA HIGHLIGHTS:

The University of Wisconsin was named the victor of the 63rd Timme Angsten
Memorial Regatta, hosted by Chicago Yacht Club in 420's at Monroe Harbor in
Chicago. Ten teams traveled from around the Midwest to spend Thanksgiving
weekend sailing in light winds. This was the first time in that the event
included no out of district teams. Kansas was a No Show.

When the regatta was started in 1947, it was one of the only opportunities for
college sailors to race outside their district and the best sailors always
came. They raced in cold or freezing weather in boats which were not self
rescuing. The racing rules did not allow alternative penalties – if you hit a
mark or misjudged a port crossing and you went back to the dock, with a hefty
penalty.

The “Timmes” has always been a highlight of the fall season for the Midwest
District and serves as their Fall Championship. The schedule has been changed
to start on Friday at noon, allowing competitors to have Thanksgiving at home,
and then travel to Chicago.

Conditions:
Friday light winds and only 4 races were completed, under sunny skies, starting
in the early afternoon with temperatures in the 40’s. Wisconsin quickly was
recognized as the team to beat. Saturday started sunny with 50 degree
temperatures, and SW and SE-S winds 4-8. Sunday started with a thunderstorm,
and the Race Committee waited for it to pass, then six races were completed in
a northerly wind under cloudy skies with temperatures in the 50’s.
Wisconsin was also awarded the MCSA Fall Dinghy Championship trophy as the
highest placing Midwest school.
