With all due respect, I beg to differ.
If an old trophy can be revitalized into a new form that sailors
appreciate, I think that's much better than tossing it into the bin
and introducing a new trophy with no history or legacy. When looking
at some of the old trophies, I can see the rich tradition and
background within them. In my opinion, that makes them that much
cooler to win (even if counter to the original deed of gift).

Mike,
As of Saturday I will also be a 71 year old grumpy coach and I
agree with
your concerns with redirecting donated trophies. When the true
purpose for
which a trophy was created has passed, so should the trophy. After
all, it
wasn't that a trophy was brought into existence for it's own sake.
There
was an original purpose. If there is no longer the purpose, the
trophy should
be retired.
If we polled our current crop of sailors, how many would know who
Arthur
Knapp was? I'm going to ask my team just out of curiosity.
My favorite quote from Arthur is, "How do you win races? Take the
start
and improve your position." It is my repetition of that quote that
may be my
team's only reminder of one of sailing's greats.

All,
This is a rumination from a grumpy old coach. I find it
inappropriate
that
the Arthur Knapp Trophy is now presented to the highest placed
service
academy finisher in the Eastern Old Guard Trophy regatta. The Knapp
Trophy
was established for competition amongst Harvard, Yale, and
Princeton. It
may no longer seem relevant in the current scheme of ICSA
competition,
but,
if so, the trophy should simply be retired. It honors one of the
early
great college sailors, three time winner of the Oliver May Cup,
predecessor
to the McMillan Cup. Knapp sailed for Princeton, and Harvard and
Yale
joined with Princeton in promoting college sailing in its earliest
years.
The Knapp Trophy used to stand alone and later was contested
concurrently
with the Mosbacher Trophy, which happens to honor another early
college
sailing great. Rolling the Knapp and Mosbacher into one with the
Owen
just
should not be done.
In the last few years, more and more trophies with historic
significance
have had their conditions altered. I would suggest that this
practice
ought
to be curtailed. Were there accurate records of deeds of gift -
for most
trophies were donated by individuals - such changes would be seen
clearly
to
violate those deeds. Again, the proper approach would be to
establish new
trophies for events with new formats and retire the old.

Subject: [NEISA] Old Guard Trophy @ Brown - Final Results
Old Guard Trophy @ Brown
for the Owen, Mosbacher, and Knapp Trophies
March 27-28, 2010
Saturday:
A cold but sunny day with temps in the low 40's and a dying N/NE
breeze
to
start the day. One set in each division in the N/NE wind at 4-12
knots.
Two abandoned races in sketchy conditions with lots of time
waiting for
the breeze to stabilize. More than a two hour delay on land as we
waited
for the seabreeze to fill in at around 4pm. One more set in each
division
from 4pm-til 6pm in a southerly at 7-10 knots. All courses were
windward/leewards with an offset and gates. No protests or
breakdowns.
Sunday:
Another very cold day but with great breeze from S/SE at 12-16
knots. 8
races sailed in each division on windward/leeward courses. No
protests
or
breakdowns.
A huge thanks to our judges Kim Hapgood and Ted Green. Thanks as
well
to
the Brown sailors who helped out:
Tommy Fink '13, Tucker Adams '11, Evan Gill '12, Jessica Claflin
'13,
and
Brent Lunghino '12, Niki Osvalds '11, and Jacob Tower '11.
Yale wins the Owen (Overall winner) and Mosbacher (Top Ivy League
school)
Trophies over Brown. The USMMA-King's Point wins the Knapp Trophy
as
the
top service academy in sixth overall. Final Results can be found at
