BACKGROUND

At a gala dinner at the New York Yacht Club last May, the Fordham University
Sailing Association celebrated the 60th Anniversary of its founding and the
10th Anniversary of the rebirth of the Sailing Team after a 25-year hiatus.
University President Joseph McShane, S. J. welcomed the 164 guests and US
Sailing President Gary Jobson was Guest Speaker. A Fordham Sailing Hall of
Fame, which honored its founders and two former team captains, was
inaugurated, plus $153,000 was raised to upgrade the fleet and fund the
employment of a professional coach.

Founded in 1841, Fordham is the Jesuit University of New York City with
campuses at Lincoln Center in Manhattan and Rose Hill in the Bronx. The
latter is one of the most beautiful campuses in the east and is a 10-minute
drive from our spectacular Sailing venue on City Island overlooking Long
Island Sound and Eastchester Bay.

THE OPPORTUNITY

Head Coach of the Fordham University Sailing Team has the potential to
become one of the best coaching positions in College Sailing for the
following reasons:

   1. Location - New York City is one of the most exciting urban centers in
the world and arguably the “Best College Town” in the country.
   2. Homeport – We sail from Morris Yacht & Beach Club on City Island with
five + acres of park-like property including 400’ of waterfront.
   3. Mission - In 2000, the sailors decided the direction of the program,
namely to be the best that they can be and have fun in the process. For the
past six years, Fordham has been ranked among the top three club teams in
MAISA, a conference of 10 varsity and 36 club teams. During the past two
years, Fordham has missed qualifying for the ICSA National Championship
Tournament by 13 and six points respectively.
   4. Support - Two alumni, both former team captains, have guided the
program for 11 years. This continuity has provided stability, organization,
management and a sense of purpose, which has allowed our sailors to develop
their competitive Sailing skills; take responsibility for the growth of the
program and have fun while doing so. In addition, the Sailing Association
has grown from a 75-member Afterguard to a 200-member group consisting of
the Afterguard, other Alumni, Parents and Friends of Fordham Sailing, which
helps support the program both financially and in non-financial ways, e.g.,
serving as host/chaperones at away regattas. This has allowed Fordham to
compete in Intersectional competitions in six of the seven ICSA regional
   conferences.
   5. Our Sailors - Currently our team consists of 25 smart and dedicated,
student-athletes from all over the country. Because of the time commitment
required, they are by necessity well organized, highly motivated with good
time-management skills, and thus able to enjoy the fruits of their athletic
and academic pursuits. If a sailor needs academic assistance, the program
has a volunteer Academic Adviser from the Jesuit community exclusively for
   that purpose.
