Day 1 of the 2011 Navy Spring Women's Intersectional went very smoothly for the 18 teams in attendance. Promptly following the 0930 competitors meeting, the fleet headed out in cloudy and slightly chilly conditions for the morning races. The wind was out of the Southwest and a 4 leg windward leeward course was set in the Severn River, off Triton Point, near the entrance to Spa Creek. A Division began the day in FJs while B was in 420s. The wind was light and shifty in the morning and four races were completed per division in 5-8 knots and flat water before the fleet came in for a short lunch break. After lunch, the wind shifted left a bit and increased in strength while the skies cleared and the temperatures climbed into the upper 50s. While the wind remained shifty throughout the day, but the puffs crept up near 20 during the afternoon races and the waves picked up to near 2 feet on the left side of the course. After nine races, the divisions switched fleets and ran one race while the wind shifted right and decreased in strength back to the 5-10 range to end the day. Boston College is in the lead with 8 races remaining for tomorrow. Thanks to coaches Brian Clancy and Clinton Hayes for hearing protests, which resulted in three breakdown requests granted and one protest disallowed.
