Sat:
A beautiful day on Horseshoe Bend of the St. Mary's River. Sailors were
greeted by the impressive schooner, The Spirit of Massachusetts, as she was
visiting SMC most of the week. Such a site seemed only appropriate as MAISA
sailors honored Ann Campbell for her 35 years of service running our
conference.

Also fitting for Ann's final America Trophy (in an official capacity) was
the awarding of The Robert Purrington Award to (grandson) Michael Campbell.
This trophy is awarded annually to the graduating senior from MAISA who has
made outstanding contributions to college sailing through his/her efforts,
not only by competing, but in the promotion of the sport, by fostering
sportsmanship among teams, maintaining quality of competition, and
contributing to the overall performance of our district. The recipient is
not necessarily the best sailor in MAISA but embodies the selfless spirit of
true competition and commitment to excellence in support of college sailing
in the MAISA district. Event PRO, Stan "The Man" Hyatt, was the first
recipient of the award in 1997-98.

Winds were from the East, later becoming Southeast at 15-30 before racing
had to be postponed around 3:30 with 8A and 7B completed. Courses were
W-3's, W-4's (with gates) and triangle/windwards when necessary to keep the
majority of the fleet upright. Stovy Brown and Barbara Herbig were afloat
as jury. Danny Pletsch and the SMC team spent a lot of time rescuing the
back end of the fleet.

Sun:
Westerly winds from 5-17 knots made for tricky racing under beautiful skies.
Courses were W-4’s with gates all day long. Sailors and spectators alike were
treated
to a show by the MD Dove who went out for a sail. Thankfully, they did not
take out
the pin end of the starting/finishing line, but it was close. Several
protests were handled
by the jury during lunch breaks and one request for redress was heard at the
end of the racing.

Congratulations to Georgetown for winning the America Trophy and to all of the
top eight schools who will be representing MAISA at the ICSA National
Championship
Semi-Finals hosted by the USC Sailing Team, The US Sailing Center of Long
Beach, and The PCCSC.
