ICSA LaserPerformance Singlehanded Nationals, Day 2

Another beautiful fall day in Chicago, and this time we were graced with
a little more wind! The sailors arrived bright and early to rig up and
head out for a 930am first warning. With the breeze shifting to the
southeast overnight, and then going further south this morning, the
waves were even more confused and lumpy than yesterday, though the
sailors had the benefit of a little more pressure to battle them. But
with the sun shining all day and temperatures in the upper 40s to lower
50s on the water, it was hard to complain about the conditions. The
racers certainly came out looking much more alive today than yesterday,
starting to get much more physical and competitive in the tricky
conditions. The judges were on watch, and were flagging for Rule 42
propulsion violations, catching four of them in the men's fleet, and one
in the women's. Ten windward/leeward courses twice around were sailed,
with races lasting about twenty-five minutes.

In both fleets, the leaders were extending all day, finding their groove
early and maintaining top finishes all day. In the Men's full rig, Cam
Cullman, a junior from Yale, has made it hard for anyone else to have a
chance, posting seven top-four finishes today to lead the fleet with 56
points over Charleston's Zeke Horowitz with 81. Christopher Stocke from
USF is right behind with only 82 points, followed by Mateo Vargas from
Stanford who has slowly been working his way up through the fleet with
the most consistent finishes of the event. Vargas has 89. The men all
struggled to stay particularly consistent, everyone with at least one
tough race.

On the women's side, however, Boston College Eagle Annie Haeger
demonstrated her dominance in the Laser Radial. In the ten races sailed
today, she won eight and got second in two, proving that with sheer boat
speed and ability to work the waves both upwind and downwind she could
work her way up through the fleet to the top every time. Haeger leads
the radials with 31 points. In second, with 68 is last year's champion
Claire Dennis from Yale. Dennis was able to stay consistent in the top
three most races of the day, putting her seven points ahead of teammate
Emily Billing. Sky Adams from Brown sits in fourth with 95.

Tomorrow is looking to be blowing from the south around 20 knots, which
should give great breeze for the last four races of the event.
