'gateway' is generally a comfortable default label.  IP Routers were originally galled gateways.

Although the RFC5598 discussions were extensive -- including about nomenclatuire -- the term mediator has objectively not gotten any traction.

At this point, using the word gateway -- possibly with a qualifier to clarify placement or role -- seems the most practical choice.  But that needs explicit definition in any document using it, absent widespread and stable usage.

Boundary Gateway goes to place.

Filtering Gateway goes to function.

I think those are examples that make sense. No doubt there are others equally plausible So the choice devolves to community preference.
