Google groups ?

Google groups would be a bit of a backward step. You need a Google login again (which is more of a pain than just a mailman subscription), and they require a lot of administrative effort (c.f. http://ejohn.org/blog/google-groups-is-dead/ ). Plus, the anti-spam system they have is extremely off-putting to non-technical users (see previous link).

Having a system with as low a burden and barrier to entry as possible should be a key criteria.

I agreed with all your other points though :) Also, with a git repo, you don't actually need to give other people access: you can do in a centralised fashion a la Linux, or people can just have their own repos which developers pull from. It doesn't have to have ssh access/etc.

Cheers

Alex.
