I don't know much about the area but I have experience using Latex which does that just fine. I know there are abundant books written in Latex. I would suggest you start with that. It already has a document style called book. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LaTeX is a good guide. There are also guides called "the not so short guide to latex" (or similar title).
