On 64-bit systems, one needs 64-bit versions of software: sometimes, a bti difficult to search for, since software vendors sometimes keep 64-bit beta versions hidden under a few layers of pages. I use the following:
acroread_9.2-1karmic1_amd64.deb
google-chrome-beta_current_amd64.deb
libflashplayer-10.0.42.34.linux-x86_64.so.tar.gz
opera_10.10.4742.gcc4.qt3_amd64.deb
skype-ubuntu-intrepid_2.1.0.47-1_amd64.deb
Of course, the above may be frowned upon by many members since they are certainly not open source. However, as Sharad mentions, many web pages/software actually look for these, and may not be fully compatible with open source alternatives. Further, some beta versions themselves may pop up irritating error/warning messages as well.
Cheers, Sumantra.
