circa 2000 all the biggies of the linux world in India got together and formed the Indian Linux Users Group and some of the extant groups called themselves chapters of ILUG. Like ILUGC (Chennai), Bombay, Hyderabad, Delhi. Then the biggies had a big fight among themselves as to who would be the boss. They disagreed, and in the end they divided up India into various territories (like afghan warlords), each one undertaking not to interfere with the others. Then the warlords clung desperately to power in their territories and made sure no new blood was taken in. As a result most of those LUGs are dead or dying. Only Pune, Bombay and Chennai remained out of this arrangement and the LUGs are flourishing there - lots of new blood, and a third generation is now in the leadership. All this is documented somewhere or the other - I do not have the patience to find the links again. (I only became active in LUGs much later, and missed all the fun). However since most of these old fossils have realised that they are long past their use-by date and have retired, maybe the next time we may be able to form an umbrella organisation. But just *one* org? Doubtful - there are enough of the fossils left to sabotage that. -- regards KG http://lawgon.livejournal.com Coimbatore LUG rox http://ilugcbe.techstud.org/ -- LUG@IITD - http://lug-iitd.org/Footer
