I think people here need more info to be able to help you. Here is
what I recommend. Boot from a live CD and get a root console.
You might get a root console by typing
1. "sudo su" in a regular terminal (ubuntu derivative live CD)
2. pressing Control+Alt+F1 and then working your way from there (other
live CDs?)

Share the output of the following command with us.
# fdisk -l /dev/sda

This will tell us how the partitions really look.
