This would point to a serious problem with your package management
status.

I am surprised that this would happen with the steps you described:

 1. You installed a working Debian lenny from an old pre-rc dvd.
 2. You created a new /etc/apt/sources.list as enclosed in your mail.
 2. You then connected the working machine to the network and ran
     apt-get upgrade
    to upgrade it over the 'net.

... but it _can_ happen with really early dvd's :-(

One of the interesting sources of information will be:
        /var/log/dpkg.log*
You may want to look through it to figure out how/when things went
wrong.
