You could have a timed programming contest where people can use any
F/OSS tool to implement a solution, and each team (or individual) can
share their solution with others with a short, five minute
presentation (lightning talk) on how they have solved the problem.

The winners should be everyone, who have learnt how to solve a problem
in different ways, and how different people have approached the same
problem, and not the prize/gift that is given to a team or individual,
IMHO.

In the workshops, I would appreciate if you could provide the
possibility of people to sit together (with desktops and laptops), and
do hands-on work.

Visitors have to join in to see, and participate in practical work, to
get the real experience. For example:

1. If you organize an introductory emacs hands-on session, say for
couple of hours, people can try it on their laptops, or with available
desktop computers. You could give them paper hand-outs or short-cuts
for reference.

2. If you setup a local Git or Mercurial repository, you could run a
two-hour session on how one can use these for source control
management, and people should learn to start using them in their
day-to-day work.

Internet is not required for such activities. These can greatly
complement the content delivered in the stalls.

The hands-on is a very important exercise, because, if people get
stuck they can always seek immediate help from other people at the
event, get their doubts clarified, or mistakes rectified, giving them
the confidence to work independently.

End of the day, people should go back home with the satisfaction that
they have learnt something new, try it again at home or at college,
use it on a daily basis, and ask us for more information, if required.

Our infrastructure is not designed for such kind of work,
unfortunately, but, that is one of the challenges that we should work
towards, if more people are to use/work with the system.
