I believe OSX kernel is based on a BSD flavor UNIX kernel, so they are
liable to opensource the parts of the code. They do not opensource, the
important part of their system such as the GUI engine, etc.

Apple, Oracle, Microsoft, even Google are companies that support
opensource, in a way but the when it comes to something really important
like their key technology they won't open source it.

*Now back to the main topic:*

I do not agree to this article, as the price of Operating System has not
gone to 0, but the way they collect the money has just changed. They will
just increase the price of the hardware such that, it will appear as the
OS is given for Free. Like sometime ago laptop manufactures used to say you
will get windows laptop for 35K, hiding the fact that 3K was for the
operating system. With the increase in popularity mobile devises such a
method of sale (hardware + OS) became more widely accepted such that most
people don't know that part of the cost of their phones is for the OS.
Until recently for every android phone sold, a price had to be paid to
microsoft for using some of their patents[1].

GNU Linux, would be the only OS that is given for free and I mean free in
all sense.
