if you mean pgp/gpg signing then it is an authentication method.using your
key you sign your message which can then be verified by the recieveing
party.
it can also be used to encrypt messages only to be unencrypted by the
party who is supposed to recieve it provided they too have a pgp/gpg key
and you have their public key and they have yours.
i dont know if this is a good explanation.
