This is a revisit of a problem I had brought out sometime back. I have a quad xeon box with 4GB RAM which is intermittently showing a load average above 2. This is a DB server but the load average was irrespective of whether MySQL is running or not.
Among other things I noticed that all processes are taking less than 1% of CPU and Memory.

Try monitoring the disk I/O. AFAIK load average shoots up, when multiple processes are trying to read/write to disk and the process queue waiting for I/O grows.
