What are For environmental organizations there are various GIS packages available like GRASS, QGis in addition to GNU R Statistical packages for survival analysis. Also, many GPS utilities are available. > the specific issues > the need to address through use of computers and > what help do they I can't enumerate specific issues, but I do have some understanding of processes like Environmental Impact Assessment, Statistical Analysis etc. where these packages can be of help. I've seen people using proprietary softwares for these analyses and complaining about non-userfriendliness of GNU/Linux. I've friends in few research institutes, who use legacy softwares that are told to them by their seniors, colleagues or project investigators and they've been also told that GNU/Linux is suitable for them. This is the case when GRASS is considered to be one of the most advanced GIS software. Although, I'm trying to break this myth at my level and have succeeded in making one fellow to use GNU/Linux for more than 50% of his project, it's not sufficient. There are a lot more avenues to reach out than we can imagine. regards, Nishant -- Peace, Love and Compile the kernel. http://www.nishants.net ____________________________________________________ Send a rakhi to your brother, buy gifts and win attractive prizes.
