Hi ilugd@lists.linux-delhi.org,

I'm setting up RAID (for the first time in my life) on a Server (mobo
SE7520BD2). I'm using its onboard SATA RAID. I'm installing Ubuntu Linux
5.10 (AMD64). I've seen some posts where it is mentioned that these
mobos are not having hardware RAID (i.e. BIOS emulates RAID). I've
configured my onboard RAID to RAID-1 (with two SATA disks) from BIOS.
This gets confirmed on my system, since GRUB sees only one SATA disk
(because GRUB uses BIOS Int 13h services to access disk and BIOS is
aware of my RAID) but Linux sees both SATA hard disks. So if it was true
hardware RAID, Linux should see only 1 SATA disk.

I was sure on this stuff until I've seen the "Intel's Embedded Server
RAID Technology User's Guide", where they mentioned that driver update
disk needs to provided during installation to enable RAID support. I've
checked the DUD (driver update disk), it contains driver for linux
kernel 2.4.

So my query is if my motherboard supports software RAID, then what's the
use of Intel's DUD ? And if my motherboard supports hardware RAID, how
to enable it in Linux without moving to older one version ? Or should I
go with Linux supported software RAID as I've seen in some posts that's
it is great tooo ?

Thanx in advance,

P.S. My mobo has an EFI (Extensible Firmware Interface,
http://www.intel.com/technology/efi/) ROM, so is there any way to boot
an EFI enabled OS. Ubuntu Linux neither supports GPT style partitions (I
mean there is no option during installation). I'm new to EFI so just for
curiosity I want to know.
