I tried swapon with /dev/hda6. It says:
swapon: /dev/hda6: Operation not permitted

/var/log/dmesg has the following

[17179595.252000] Unable to find swap-space signature
[17179597.072000] Unable to find swap-space signature

If I do, "sudo mkswap /dev/hda6", it works and then swapon works also.

But when I reboot the machine, I am back to the same problem.
